Carmelo Anthony; Is he worth it?
Carmelo Anthony has been a well established player in the NBA since 2003. After playing his college ball at the university of Syracuse under Jim Boeheim Anthony was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 2003.
Anthony transitioned well from college to the NBA. Averaging 20+ points in his first year and receiving and all-star selection in just his fourth year in the league. Carmelo quickly became a fan favorite for many and one of the best small forwards in the league. Anthony spent his first 8 seasons with Denver before being traded to the New York Knicks, right before the trade deadline in 2011. Anthony continued to do well in New York being the leader of a rather lackluster Knicks team. However his reign over the Knicks would not last very long.
In the 2014-2015 season Anthony saw his numbers decline and you could see some differences in his game as well. These differences mainly being he looked like he didn’t care. Carmelo Anthony became this figure head that went out every night, scored his 20 points for his team, and sold jerseys. Anthony stopped caring. You could see it in his defense (I do realize that no one in the NBA plays defense but his is especially bad), the way he forces shots to keep his 20 points a game, and even his lack of general emotion showed that he had stopped caring.
More and more people started to see this trend through this last years with the Knicks. However, when it became news that Anthony would be joining the up and coming, young Thunder team in Oklahoma City in 2017 people became optimistic of him again. Joining talents such as Russell Westbrook and Paul George, people thought the Thunder could give the juggernauts in the West; the Golden State Warriors, a run for their money. It would turn out quite the opposite actually. Not only did Anthony average a career low 16 points a game this past season, the Thunder under performed to many people’s expectations. So here is my question. Is Carmelo Anthony even worth it at this point?
To answer my question I believe the answer is no. I feel that he will be too expensive and too much of a liability on defense to bring value to a team. Do I think he is still a good player? Yes, but at way too high of a cost. The days of young Carmelo Anthony are over and will never return. At this point in his career, as much as he denies it, Carmelo is a sixth man through and through.
